Overview
“Join ‘the King of Cabaret’ for four unmissable performances.”
An Evening of Jake Thackray: Thursday 10 July 7:30pm
A show devoted to the great Yorkshire chansonnier Jake Thackray. Active from the mid ’60’s to the early ’90’s, Thackray’s brilliant songs were never an easy fit for either the folk club circuit, nor his guest spots on programmes like “That’s Life”. His legacy, however, is a body of work that Stefan believes should be widely celebrated.
The Elements of Tom Lehrer: Friday 11 July 7.30pm
Whether you’re poisoning pigeons in the park, doing the Vatican rag, or remembering your periodic table, there’s no situation in life that can’t be made better by the great American songwriter Tom Lehrer. Catchy tunes and pin-sharp lyrics combine in this perennially popular show.
Shakespeare’s Music: Saturday 12 July 3.00pm
From Robert Johnson to Cole Porter to Mendelsohn to Benjamin Britten, this is a celebration of Shakespeare’s music – songs he wrote, music he inspired, and stories about it. Gyles Brandreth joins Stefan Bednarczyk to explore more than five hundred years of music that might never have existed without William Shakespeare.
An Evening of Flanders and Swann: Saturday 12 July 7.30pm
Michael Flanders and Donald Swann were renowned for their hilarious comic songs, touching and raucous in equal measure. Their humour lives on in Stefan Bednarczyk’s excellent musical timing as he revives a spectacular evening of Flanders and Swann songs.
